One of the top attractions is a 98-foot Scenic lighthouse that includes thrilling spiral water slides and provides panoramic views.
Xcaret, on the other hand, is a cultural and eco-archaeological theme park that blends nature, history, and culture. It offers a perfect balance of light adventure and cultural immersion. Location
When comparing Xcaret vs Xel-Ha, the location plays a big role, especially if you’re short on time or you want to avoid long drives. The decision about which park you visit could make all the difference for your trip.
Both parks lie on Mexico’s breathtaking Caribbean coast between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Xcaret is closer to Playa del Carmen – only about 6.5km (4 mi) away, making it a convenient option if you’re staying in Playacar or the nearby area. It’s just a 15-minute drive away from Playa del Carmen and approximately 75 km (47 mi) south of Cancun. This park is easily accessible from the main Highway 307, which makes getting there quick and easy. If you’re staying in Cancun, this park may be the more convenient option for you.
Xel-Ha is a bit further down the coast, closer to the Tulum Ruins. It’s an excellent option if you’re staying in Tulum or heading that way after your visit. It’s about a 40-minute drive from Playa del Carmen and only 13 km (8 mi) south of the Tulum archaeological site. The park is approximately 122 km (76 mi) south of Cancun and 240 km (149 mi) north of Chetumal.

Planning a trip during seaweed season and wondering how Xcaret vs Xel-Ha compare when it comes to it? It’s something worth knowing, especially if you’re travelling from April to August.
Sargassum (that pesky brown algae) shows up in the Riviera Maya during the warmer months. Sometimes it piles up on beaches and sticks around as late as November. Not great news when you’re dreaming of crystal clear water. And while this natural seaweed isn’t dangerous, it can cloud up the water and give off a smell that’s far from paradise.
XCARET:
At Xcaret, sargassum sometimes reaches the shore during peak season. However, the park fights back with a daily clean-up crew of more than 100 people, according to the official website. Before the park even opens, a trained cleanup crew arrives, focusing first on visitors’ favourite areas. The clean-up focuses on Snorkel Cove, the beach zones, and natural pools where underground rivers meet the sea. This keeps the main swimming spots clean and pleasant, even in the middle of summer. When we visited in July 2024, the water was clean thanks to their hard work, with no seaweed problem at all.
XEL-HA:
Xel-Ha, on the other hand, benefits from its natural inlet structure, according to Wikipedia. Its layout naturally filters much of the seaweed before it reaches the snorkelling zones. While some sargassum can still sneak in during peak season, the water usually stays clearer. Staff at the park do their best to give visitors an excellent experience. They carry out cleaning works as part of daily operations and keep the rivers and an inlet as clean as possible. The water here is always cleaner, with better visibility compared to sea-facing beaches.

Activities at Xel-Ha
When deciding between Xcaret vs Xel-Ha, your perfect day might depend on how much time you want to spend in the water.
One of the biggest differences is the focus of the parks. If your ideal day involves snorkelling, water activities, and jungle adventures, then Xel-Ha was made for you. This park is a water lover’s dream. This natural aquatic park offers over 20 exciting activities and attractions, with something for every type of traveller.
The heart of Xel-Ha is La Caleta, a beautiful natural inlet where calm, clear waters meet the Caribbean Sea. It’s one of the best places to snorkel in the region. Bright tropical fish, natural rock formations, and gentle currents make it perfect for underwater surprises. You’ll get your snorkel gear on site, so all you need to do is to jump into the water.
WATER ADVENTURE IN THE JUNGLE:
One of the most iconic experiences here is the Scenic Lighthouse. Climb to the top (30 m/98 ft high) for unbeatable views of the coastline. Then choose one of four twisting water slides to zip your way back down. It’s fast, fun, and one of the most popular things to do in the park. Prefer something slower? Did you know that according to the World Research Institute website Mexico has one of the largest areas of mangrove forests in the world? Mangroves are essential to our ecosystem; they provide a home and shelter from extreme weather for a variety of mammals, birds, and crustaceans. There are four types in Quintana Roo – black, white, red, and buttonwood.
For more thrill, try Trepachanga, where you test your balance on two ropes above the water. Or try Salpichanga, a set of mini zip lines that splash you straight into the lagoon. If you love an adrenaline kick, don’t miss the Cliff of Courage, a thrilling jump for the brave.

Your journey begins at the traditional Mexican hacienda, which is like travelling to the past. Walk through colourful plazas and admire the architecture from the golden age of haciendas in Yucatan. Here, you can learn how agave plant was extracted, processed and used. There’s even the Museum of Mexican Folk Art, with local artefacts.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE:
As you walk through the park, you’ll stumble upon cultural performances, from pre-Hispanic dances to Mexican folk music, Horse exhibitions, and more. Watch as a Mayan shaman performs a Temazcal ceremony and learn how these sacred rituals connect body and spirit.
For families with young children or non-swimmers, this parks is an excellent match. Kids can explore the Butterfly Pavillion, where hundreds of native butterflies flutter freely. According to their official website, this park is also home to one of the largest aviaries in the world, with over 1,500 birds, including toucans, flamingos, parrots, and the golden eagle – Mexico’s national bird.
Water lovers aren’t left out. Swim in the underground rivers, float through caves and natural rock tunnels, beneath the jungle canopy. There are also quiet lagoons and natural pools for a quick dip. Three underground rivers with crystal clear waters are peaceful, beautiful and completely unique.
One of the highlights is also the Paradise River, where you can sail through crystal-clear waters and admire flora and fauna. This peaceful rafting experience runs through the landscape of the Tropical Jungle Trail. Don’t forget to walk through a Mayan village which showcases the culture and daily life of the ancient Maya.
ACTIVITIES XCARET VS XEL-HA:
However, Xcaret offers fewer water activities. It’s also not as action-packed as Xel-Ha. For more action, add-on activities like Sea Trek (walking underwater), Snuba, or parasailing. Just note, these come at extra cost, as of July 2025.
MORE THAN A THEME PARK:
It’s also a place with true historical depth. This park is built on the grounds of a Mayan port city. It thrived as early as the 6th century AD. You’ll find its ancient energy in the jungle trails and when exploring the Mayan structures. There’s also a Mexican cemetery and a beautiful stone church that blends perfectly nature and architecture.
EVENING MEXICO ESPECTACULAR SHOW:
The perfect finale? Epic 2-hour Xcaret Mexico Espectacular show, with 300 performers, lights, costumes, and live music. This famous evening show is one of the reasons many people come here. It’s the soul of Mexico on stage and a highlight you’ll talk about for years. The show opens with a stunning ritual Mayan ball game and follows Mexico through its most defining moments. You’ll travel through pre-Hispanic times, Spanish conquest, independence, modern revolution, and celebration. You’ll hear mariachi, see the Papantla Flyers spin from the sky, the Pineapple Dance, and the emotional Dance of the Old Men. The show ends with ‘Mexico en la Piel’ song.
This show is visually stunning, emotionally powerful, and proud. It captures the soul of Mexico like nothing else. We’ve seen it twice, and both times, it moved us to tears. It’s that powerful.

When comparing Xcaret vs Xel-Ha, the dining experience makes a big difference. At Xel-Ha, you get an all-inclusive deal. With your ticket, you get unlimited buffet access and an open bar available throughout the day. This includes breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are all included – no extra spending is required. As of July 2025, Xel-Ha is the only Xcaret park that includes a full open bar, including alcohol. It’s perfect if you plan to eat often or sip by the water.
Meanwhile, Xcaret offers diverse food choices in beautiful sit-down restaurants with themed dining experiences. But there’s a catch: unless you upgrade to the Plus or Total Package, you’ll need to pay extra for meals at these restaurants.
It offers a wide range of Mexican and international restaurants, and their food is delicious. However, it’s not included in the basic ticket.

If you’re looking for a full day of fun without surprise spending, Xel-Ha wins for overall value. At Xcaret, it’s more complicated. The basic ticket is affordable, but you’ll spend more inside. No food, no locker, and no extra activities. You can avoid surprises by choosing the Plus or Total package, but these extras push the price up quickly. There is also a special Night ticket if you want to see the famous Mexico Espectacular show. You can access the park from 4 PM and the evening show starts at 7 PM. But you won’t have time to enjoy all the attractions and shows.
While the park offers more cultural and natural attractions, it also comes with more fees, especially if you want to do it all.
Xcaret is worth it for its cultural shows and attractions. However, if we’re talking about total value, Xel-Ha is easier on the wallet.
Which park is best for kids?
Choosing between two parks with kids? It all comes down to what your children enjoy most.
If you’re planning a family trip and can’t decide between Xcaret and Xel-Ha, the choice depends on your kids’ ages and interests. Xcaret is a fantastic option for families with younger kids or multi-generational groups. It’s stroller-friendly and wheel-chair friendly, and the wide, paved paths make exploring easy. Children’s World offers shallow climbing nets, obstacles, hanging bridges, and splash areas designed for them. Toddlers and preschoolers will love the butterfly pavilion and the aviary with colourful birds. Your little ones can see flamingos, jaguars, and animal exhibits that feel like a walk through a jungle. They can also visit a replica of a Mayan village – it’s a calmer experience with plenty of shade spots and rest areas.
Xel-Ha, by contrast, is ideal for active kids who love the water and confident swimmers. Older children will enjoy snorkelling in coves, the lazy river, and big water slides. There’s also a Children’s World with smaller water slides and play zones here, but it’s more water-focused.
In short, if your child prefers dry land and animal fun, go to Xcaret. If they love splashing and exploring underwater, choose Xel-Ha.

At both parks, kids aged 0-4 enter free with ID. Children 5-11 years old get 25% off the adult price, as of July 2025. Bring ID if your child is taller for their age. Strollers are available to rent at both parks.

Opening times
When to arrive and when not to leave.
Both parks are open daily, even on holidays. Xcaret opens at 8:30 AM, and stays open until 10 PM, giving you a full day and evening experience. But some attractions, including the underground rivers, close earlier at 5:30 PM. But don’t leave that soon! The real magic happens at night with the evening Mexico Espectacular Show. It kicks off at 6 PM and runs until 9.30 PM and is one of the best things you’ll see in Mexico. If you’re just coming for the show, you can enter with evening tickets as early as 4 PM.
Xel-Ha also opens at 8:30 AM but closes earlier at 6 PM. It’s all about sunny, splash-filled adventures, so make sure you arrive early to enjoy every second.
Money-saving tips and smart planning
If you want the best experience and value for your trip, you’ll want to plan ahead.
- BOOK ONLINE AND EARLY: Both parks offer big discounts when you book early. You’ll get 10% off if you book 7-20 days ahead, or 15% off when you book at least 21 days in advance. Even better, bundle tickets for different parks and save up to 20%.
- MAP: Grab a map when you enter – it will help you. Both parks are huge and there is a lot to do. Plan your route, and catch all the best attractions without wasting time.
- WATER GEAR: Water gear is one of the biggest differences between the parks. Xel-Ha includes snorkel gear with your ticket. Just scan your wristband at one of the gear stations and enjoy. At Xcaret, you’ll need to bring or rent snorkel gear unless you buy a Plus or Total package.
- FOOTWEAR MATTERS: At Xel-Ha, you’re mostly in the water. Water shoes make everything easier, including walking on slippery rocks, climbing slides, and moving between attractions. Shoes that dry quickly and grip well will save your feet.
- SUNSCREEN AND REPELENT: Protect both parks and wildlife by wearing only biodegradable sunscreen and bug spray. Chemicals from regular products can damage cenotes, rivers, and animals that make these places so special.
Pros and Cons: Which Park Delivers the Day You Want?
XEL-HA: PROS AND CONS:
Xel-Ha is an excellent option if you love simplicity. One, all-inclusive ticket covers unlimited food, drinks, and an open bar all day. It’s the ultimate stress-free set-up where everything is covered. The park is a natural paradise – set in a breathtaking lagoon, with tons of water activities. You’ll spend all day snorkelling, tubing down the rivers, and jumping into the water. And let’s be honest, lower ticket prices never hurt.
However, if you’re not a water person, the experience might feel limited. The park focuses heavily on aquatic fun. If you’re not into being in the water, there’s not a ton of variety and you might feel a little bored. Also, it’s a bit out of the way, around 40 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. This could feel far depending on your hotel’s location and your plans.
XCARET – PROS AND CONS:
On the flip side, Xcaret offers a completely different experience. It feels like a living museum wrapped in a themed park. You’ll explore rich Mexican history through cultural performances, music, and dance. There are animal zones, underground rivers, and over 50 attractions to explore. The night show is an absolute standout, and you’ll never run out of things to do. It’s perfect for families, culture lovers or anyone who wants more than just thrills.
The downside? It can get pricey. Basic tickets don’t include meals or premium add-ons, so costs can climb quickly. Also, it’s a full-day experience, especially if you stay for the night show. And while there is a lot to explore, it leans more educational and is less exciting for adrenaline seekers. If you go, plan for a full-day trip that extends into the evening.
