TIPS FOR VISITING THE ISLAND GULLY FALLS:

  • The tiny cave under the main waterfall is safe to visit. However, if you are claustrophobic, skip it.
  • Do not forget to wear water shoes (bring yours or rent them upon arrival), as the rocks can be slippery.

3. Konoko Falls and botanic garden

There are numerous falls in Ocho Rios, and Konoko Falls are one of the best. The locals used to call them Coyaba Gardens or Mahoe Falls. The waterfalls now get their name Konoko because it means ‘’rainforest’’ in Arawak (the language of the Taino tribe).

How to get to Ocho Rios in Jamaica

With two international airports (Kingston and Montego Bay), Jamaica is well served by flights from Europe, the USA and Canada. When visiting Ocho Rios, the 93 km (58 miles) shuttle ride from Montego Bay takes approximately 90 minutes.

 

HOW TO STAY SAFE IN JAMAICA

Jamaica declared a state of emergency in 2018. It was due to high levels of crime and violence around all the tourist areas in the Montego Bay Area. There is also an ongoing threat of gang violence in some areas of Kingston (the capital city), where crime is a growing problem. 

However, Jamaica has beautiful nature, and it would be a shame to miss exploring safe places. Use your common sense and be aware of your surroundings.

TIPS:

Don’t wander alone in Ocho Rios, Negril or Montego Bay at night and avoid dangerous areas. Take particular care when withdrawing money from ATMs. Don’t carry a large amount of cash or expensive jewellery with you (one of the biggest problems tourists face is, in fact, petty theft).
